Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
