Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
