Forecasters are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Forecasts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. The mercury are due to be low, meaning extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Commuting is likely to be affected.
- Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.
Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Medical Alerts Released
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this meant the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, dressing for the cold is utterly key.
