British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
