The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
